Have a heart . . .

heartThere is much to be read in national, and I guess even international, press at the moment about my favourite Soap, my essential daily fix of spying upon 15 minutes of other people’s lives: yes, The Archers.

And amidst the Helen and Rob story, the daily tweets from other avid fans, the amazing £100,000 raised for the domestic violence charity Refuge, and the sheer delight of barristers pitching their case for the defence in The Times (yes, true), came a little snippet that almost went unmissed in my desire to find a spoiler in an article I read about its much-talked-about editor, Sean O’Connor.

Commenting on the original job advert he responded to for the editor’s position, Mr O’Connor recalls that it read something along the lines of, “How would you like to work for five million bosses?’  A respectful nod to this 66-year institution’s fan base, and as one of the five million, I’m sorry to see this particular editor go, though . . .  breaking news: he says that when he left the show before in the ‘90s, he knew he’d be back and feels he’ll return again: “I don’t think I’ll ever leave. I don’t think I can leave.

So, working for five million bosses?

Well, let’s scale it down a little, but I wondered if we might find a little bit in our heart for the heads of our our own organisations?  Hopefully we’ll still challenge them daily, be positively dissatisfied enough to always keep them on their toes, and demand from them, constantly, the best that they can be at all times (we deserve it).  But next time I see mine, I’m going to be a little more gracious than I have ever been in the past.

It can’t be easy managing me.
