Many years ago a mentor suggested that the reason my team was performing well was in part something to do with me. In a fit of embarrassment and modesty I brushed his comment aside, choosing to talk about them rather than me . . . but on reflection I had to admit that my own performance as a leader may have had something (no matter how small) to do with our collective team success. Of course, it’s something I believe in most strongly when I’m talking to other leaders – I have no problem at all in making the connection between their excellence and their team’s achievements!
And I was reminded of this very recently, and of the importance of doing the best you can when you’re leading others. A lovely friend sent me this beautiful quote.
