Someone I know was bemoaning the trauma of having their kitchen refitted, and feeling more than a little down after days of not being able to cook healthy food or wash their growing mountain of dirty clothes. I felt for them, I really did.
They rang me a few days later, excited beyond belief to say that the cooker was now fitted, and the washer plumbed in – they even oozed about its genius 20 minute wash cycle (I suspect eyeing their now epic pile of unwashed linen as they spoke).
And then it struck me … simple pleasures. A washing machine and cooker aren’t likely to be motivators, but having them returned after a forced removal can clearly do wonders for the soul.
It seems that Mr Herzberg may well have been right.
