Learning to say no . . .

” . . . the next time you are asked to take on a new activity or responsibility, take the time to decide whether or not you want to do it.  Avoid the . . . response of “I can’t do it,” which may be a cover for “I don’t want to do it.” If… Read More Learning to say no . . .

Simple . . .

I walked in on a conversation. To be discreet, I’ll say not where it was, or who was there – but really, it could have been most anywhere, most anyone. Two people.  They were talking about a future mother-in-law wanting to buy one of the conversationalists an item for Christmas that they really didn’t want… Read More Simple . . .

Age or experience?

Frank Keogh of BBC Sport wrote about the passing of the darts player Eric Bristow: “Bristow’s dominance in the 1980s made him a household name and prompted the late, great commentator Sid Waddell to wax lyrical about this talent. “When Alexander of Macedonia was 33 he cried salt tears because there were no worlds left… Read More Age or experience?

3 minutes of your time . . .

Don’t know how to say what’s on your mind? Try this: Get a piece of paper and a pen. Set a timer for 3 minutes. Begin … and simply write down everything you want to say.  Don’t worry about grammar, punctuation, corrections, syntax.  Just write.  Stop when the timer goes off. Pause, take a deep… Read More 3 minutes of your time . . .

It only takes . . .

It was a weekday.  A Tuesday night.  I had company.  In the space of 2 hours I packed in: A photography shoot Reading 5 books Playing the piano A stint on the rowing machine A walk in the garden Cooking my guest a meal Watching 2 episodes of their favourite programme Life seems so full… Read More It only takes . . .

Seeing is believing . . .

A colleague shared with me that they live with colour-blindness.  I confessed that I had little understanding of what the realities of this meant for them, day by day.  So they gave some insight.       Them: That grass out there.  What colour is it? Me: Green. Them:  No.  Grass is orange. The fabulousness… Read More Seeing is believing . . .

Do you dare?

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”  (Mark Twain) Literally?  Not at all appealing. Metaphorically?  Hmm … I might just try it tomorrow.

Getting the job done . . .

In an office I know, there’s a wooden window pole.  I suspect it could come from the 1920s at least, though I’m not entirely sure.  The pole might best be described as a gaff … leading me to an enlightening conversation one particular morning about the origin of the role “Gaffer” in the early days… Read More Getting the job done . . .
